GETTING TO AFRICATOWN HERITAGE HOUSE

Africatown Heritage House is located within Africatown, a small historic community that was founded after the Civil War by survivors of the Clotilda and other Black residents.

When you come to visit the exhibition, please be mindful that you’re entering a residential area. We hope you’ll do your part to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents by:

  • Adhering to designated speed limits.
  • Remaining aware of pedestrians and children. (Please note that there is a school near Africatown Heritage House.)
  • Disposing of trash in proper receptacles and taking what you bring in back out with you.
  • Respecting the public property of the community and private property of residents, employees and other visitors. (For example, parking on lawns is prohibited.)

To assist with the traffic flow into and out of Africatown, we encourage you to use the following directions. Please note that GPS directions will most likely vary from these by trying to take you a more direct route. Out of respect for the residents of Africatown, it’s better to use fewer residential roads, as outlined here:

From Interstate 65 South:

  • Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 9 for I-165 S toward Prichard/Downtown Mobile
  • Continue onto I-165 S
  • Take exit 2 toward I-10 E/US-90 E/Bay Bridge Rd
  • Turn left onto Paper Mill Rd.
  • Turn left onto McKinley St.
  • Turn right onto Winbush (or Wimbush) St.
  • Africatown Heritage House will be on the immediate right

From Interstate 10 West:

  • Take exit 27 for US-90/US-98 toward Government St
  • Keep right at the fork, follow signs for State Docks/Prichard and merge onto Old Spanish Trail
  • Continue onto Africatown Blvd/Bay Bridge Rd/Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge
  • Turn right onto Paper Mill Rd
  • Turn left onto McKinley St
  • Turn right onto Winbush (or Wimbush) St
  • Africatown Heritage House will be on the immediate right

Thank you for doing your part to honor and protect Africatown and its residents during your visit.
