- We are a proud partner of Museums for All. Families or individuals receiving SNAP benefits receive free admission when they present their EBT card and a valid photo ID. When purchasing tickets online, use discount code “MFA“.
- We support our troops through the Blue Star Museums program by offering free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, beginning on Armed Forces Day and ending on Labor Day. The active duty member does not have to be present for family to use this discount. ID should be presented at check-in. When purchasing tickets online, use discount code “BLUST”.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times inside Africatown Heritage House and may not be left unattended in the lobby, exhibit space, or multimedia rooms. Additionally, please be respectful of how visitors around you are experiencing this exhibit. To preserve the solemnity of the experience, no photography is allowed inside the exhibition.
For groups of 10 or more people, advance reservations are required due to capacity limitations. See below for Group and School Tour information before visiting Africatown Heritage House. No walkup groups will be permitted.
GROUP & SCHOOL TOURS
SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS:
Guided school tours and hands-on education activities are offered for 4th-12th grade students, teachers, and chaperones. Schools in Mobile County receive free admission.
GROUP TOURS:
Group tours are available for groups of 10 or more people (school field trips – see above). Guided tours are available upon request.

GETTING TO AFRICATOWN HERITAGE HOUSE
Africatown Heritage House is located within Africatown, a small historic community that was founded after the Civil War by survivors of the Clotilda and other Black residents.
When you come to visit the exhibition, please be mindful that you’re entering a residential area. We hope you’ll do your part to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents by:
- Adhering to designated speed limits.
- Remaining aware of pedestrians and children. (Please note that there is a school near Africatown Heritage House.)
- Disposing of trash in proper receptacles and taking what you bring in back out with you.
- Respecting the public property of the community and private property of residents, employees and other visitors. (For example, parking on lawns is prohibited.)
To assist with the traffic flow into and out of Africatown, we encourage you to use the following directions. Please note that GPS directions will most likely vary from these by trying to take you a more direct route. Out of respect for the residents of Africatown, it’s better to use fewer residential roads, as outlined here:
From Interstate 65 South:
- Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 9 for I-165 S toward Prichard/Downtown Mobile
- Continue onto I-165 S
- Take exit 2 toward I-10 E/US-90 E/Bay Bridge Rd
- Turn left onto Paper Mill Rd.
- Turn left onto McKinley St.
- Turn right onto Winbush (or Wimbush) St.
- Africatown Heritage House will be on the immediate right
From Interstate 10 West:
- Take exit 27 for US-90/US-98 toward Government St
- Keep right at the fork, follow signs for State Docks/Prichard and merge onto Old Spanish Trail
- Continue onto Africatown Blvd/Bay Bridge Rd/Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge
- Turn right onto Paper Mill Rd
- Turn left onto McKinley St
- Turn right onto Winbush (or Wimbush) St
- Africatown Heritage House will be on the immediate right

We strongly encourage you to buy your tickets in advance online. Please note that entry to the Africatown Heritage House is by timed entry ticket. A few tickets will be sold at the reception desk on the day of for entry on a first come, first served basis. We do not offer refunds or rescheduling for missed visits.
